Dallas Hope Charities Announces New Program Collective Hope Coalition
Prevent LGBTQ Suicide
Dallas, TX, June 2, 2020: As Pride month begins, Dallas Hope Charities (DHC) is proud to announce the formation of Collective Hope Coalition, an initiative aimed at eliminating suicide among our LGBTQ community in the Dallas area. “In today’s current climate of heightened prejudice, fear and uncertainty, DHC is proud to be part of the solution in providing hope over despair”, CEO Evie Scrivner said.
The focus of the coalition is to provide effective and lasting solutions for our LGBTQ community who are desperately struggling with taking their own lives because of the shame that others can create around sexual identity or orientation. This issue must be addressed and we, as a community need to do much more to reduce the factors and eliminate the hopelessness that leads to suicide in the LGBTQ community.
The statistics are staggering and support the need for this Coalition:
Centers for Disease Control: LGBTQ Texans 9th-12th grade
- 42% considered attempting suicide vs 14% heterosexual
- 30% made a suicide plan vs 12% heterosexual
- 23% attempted suicide vs 10% heterosexual
National LGBT Health Education Center
- 17% suicides of LGBTQ seniors (65+) of the 15% of U.S. population
- 40% prevalence of suicide attempts in Transgender adult’s lifetime
Initially, the emphasis area is Dallas, TX, but could extend into Dallas County, and beyond.
